Our family’s long standing tradition is to carve out pumpkins the Sunday night before Halloween even if October 31 is still a week away. Some years the ghoulish smile is pretty pretty puckered up by the time the first trick-or-treaters arrive.
The Menard’s website has some simple ideas to make your carved pumpkin last longer. According to the website the key to long lasting pumpkins is maintaining the right moisture. If your pumpkin is too moist, it will get moldy; if it's too dry, it will wilt.
Don't Cut the Top Off - cut off the bottom instead.
Thoroughly Clean the Inside - try to scoop out as much as possible. After carving, soak it in a bucket, tub, or sink filled with a vinegar and water mixture (1 part vinegar and 10 parts water). Let your pumpkin bathe for 20 to 30 minutes, then take it out and let it air dry.
Keep It Hydrated - cover the carved edges with petroleum jelly or vegetable oil.
Store It in a Cool, Dry Place - try not to keep your pumpkin outside overnight when it's extremely cold out.
Don't Use Real Candles - real candles cook the inside.
Don't Carve It - What!! That’s the best part! As awful as it may sound, a pumpkin that hasn't been cut up will last longer than one that has. Get creative if you want it to last longer.
Time to head to the pumpkin patch!!! After all is said and done it is probably best to carve your pumpkins on Oct 30. Also, have you ever tried roasting pumpkin seeds? They are pretty tasty and it’s easy to do. Rinse the pumpkin seeds, blot dry, in a large bowl mix seeds with olive oil and your favorite seasoning salt, spread seeds on a baking shroast at 325 for 30 minutes.
