No one I’ve ever talked to likes to shop for new appliances. I think this is because a.) it is always an emergency purchase because the old appliance broke down and b.) it seems like you just replaced it!
I came across an interesting website called Consumers’ Checkbook. It offers unbiased reviews and undercover price research on a long list of local services.
I clicked the drop down tab for the “Services We Rate” and randomly selected Appliances Stores. This takes you to a page to select “Overview”, “Ratings” and “Articles and Advice”.
I read the overview which is a list of common sense items we all should know.
Don’t assume that a sale price for an appliance—even one that seems to be heavily discounted—is a good one.
The only way to get the best price is to shop around.
You don’t have to pay more to get good service.
When comparing prices, take into account fees for delivery, hauling away old appliances, and installation.
Pay by credit card.
Skip the extended warranties pushed by most stores.
Next I reviewed the ratings which the site backs up with an explanation of their research process. Finally I skimmed the list of articles and found that many would be worth reading before shopping.
